Variety – “Breaking Bad” may have had its finale in 2013, but Variety has confirmed that series creator Vince Gilligan is working on a new film with ties to the beloved series.
Gilligan is working on a two-hour film, though whether it’s destined for multiplexes or television is unclear.
Details are sparse, with no information on what shape the movie would take — a prequel like “Better Call Saul” or something else — or whether any of “Breaking Bad’s” stars will return. The Albuquerque Journal includes a logline stating the film “tracks the escape of a kidnapped man and his quest for freedom.”
The Journal also reports the title as “Greenbriar,” though whether that’s the final title is in the air as well. Production in the Duke City is scheduled to begin mid-November through early February, according to the Journal.
Talk about an absolute bombshell being dropped this morning. From the second Breaking Bad ended, people have been begging for more whether it meant following ancillary characters from the show in a prequel type setting (Better Call Saul) or building an expanded Breaking Bad universe, it looks like we’re getting both.
Look, I love Breaking Bad.. who doesn’t? I just don’t know if I’m entirely onboard with this idea. Vince Gilligan coming back to helm this is huge, the guy is an absolute creative genius, I just don’t know if there’s anything more to cover regarding the Jesse Pinkman saga. I thought the way the show ended was damn near perfect, and I don’t think I’m particularly interested in seeing what Jesse was up to after he left captivity at that Neo-Nazi compound.
Either way, this is going to get legs and is going to be all people want to talk about for awhile, which is fine. I just want to be the first to temper expectations so that when people inevitably compare this to Breaking Bad and are bitching and moaning about how it isn’t as good, I’d like to be the first person to say I told you so.
But that isn’t to say I’m not going to give it a shot and get very invested as the release date approaches. I know my pal @nickmaraldo is going to be real gassed up when he hears this news considering Aaron Paul is one of his favorite actors, right beneath Will Smith.
Does everyone else have interest in this too, and if so, am I the only person in the world who thinks this is going to be trash in comparison to Breaking Bad? I guess we’ll find out. To get prepared for “Greenbriar” (working title), here’s a compilation of every time Jesse Pinkman says bitch in Breaking Bad. Enjoy.
